The core areas of the Barkindji Biosphere Reserve are largely intact areas belonging to the New South Wales and Victorian governments. Neds Corner is owned by Trust for Nature. The buffer zone includes some essentially untouched and some developed areas, including the Australian Inland Botanic Gardens, and agricultural regions where regeneration of the natural environment may take place. The transition zone is anticipated to include a range of activities, including grazing, wineries, sand and salt mining, and horticulture. There is some human habitation in both the buffer and transition zones but the areas do not include any towns or cities.
